Ball Bearing

A rolling-element bearing that uses steel balls between inner and outer raceways to reduce rotational friction and support radial and axial loads.

What Is a Ball Bearing?

A ball bearing is the most common type of rolling-element bearing, consisting of an inner ring, outer ring, a set of hardened steel balls, and a cage (retainer) that keeps the balls evenly spaced. The balls roll between precision-machined grooves (raceways) on the inner and outer rings, converting sliding friction into rolling friction and dramatically reducing energy loss and heat generation.

Ball bearings are manufactured to exacting tolerances defined by ISO 492 and are classified by series (e.g., 6200, 6300, 6000) that indicate bore size, load capacity, and outer diameter.

How Ball Bearings Work

When a shaft rotates inside the inner ring, the balls orbit between the raceways, distributing the load across multiple contact points. Because the contact area between a sphere and a flat surface is very small, rolling resistance is minimal. The cage prevents the balls from contacting each other, which would cause friction and accelerated wear.

Load Capacity

Ball bearings excel at supporting radial loads (perpendicular to the shaft) and can handle moderate axial loads (parallel to the shaft) depending on the design. Deep groove ball bearings are the most versatile, while angular contact variants handle heavier combined loads.

Speed Performance

Due to their low friction, ball bearings achieve the highest speed ratings of any bearing type, making them ideal for electric motors, spindles, and turbines operating at 3,000-50,000+ RPM.

Applications in the UAE

In the UAE's industrial landscape, ball bearings are found in HVAC systems, water pumps, automotive alternators, conveyor drives, and food processing equipment. The hot, dusty environment demands sealed or shielded variants (2RS or ZZ suffix) with appropriate grease fill to prevent contamination ingress.

SMS Bearings supplies genuine ball bearings from SKF, Timken, NTN, NSK, and JTEKT/Koyo across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the wider GCC region.

How to Select the Right Ball Bearing

Selection depends on four primary factors: load magnitude and direction, rotational speed, operating temperature, and environment (dust, moisture, chemicals). Use the Bearing Selection by Application guide for a step-by-step decision framework, or refer to the Bearings FAQs for quick answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a ball bearing used for?

Ball bearings are used in electric motors, pumps, gearboxes, automotive wheels, conveyor rollers, and any rotating machinery where low-friction support for radial and light axial loads is required.

How long does a ball bearing last?

Ball bearing service life depends on load, speed, lubrication, and environment. Under proper conditions, a standard deep groove ball bearing can last 20,000 to 100,000+ operating hours. The ISO 281 L10 formula calculates the expected life at which 90% of identical bearings survive.
