Bearing Grease

A semi-solid lubricant combining base oil, thickener, and additives, specifically formulated to reduce friction and protect bearing surfaces.

What Is Bearing Grease?

Bearing grease is a semi-solid lubricant consisting of three components: base oil (mineral or synthetic, provides the lubricating film), thickener (lithium, polyurea, calcium -- gives grease its consistency), and additives (anti-wear, anti-corrosion, extreme pressure). The grease releases base oil at the contact zone to maintain a lubricating film between rolling elements and raceways.

Selection Criteria

Match the NLGI grade to the application, choose base oil viscosity based on speed and load, and select a thickener type compatible with the operating temperature. See the Grease Selection Guide for the complete SKF methodology. SMS Bearings supplies SKF and FAG Arcanol lubricants across the UAE.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of grease is best for bearings?

For general-purpose industrial bearings, lithium complex grease with NLGI Grade 2 and ISO VG 100-150 base oil is the standard. For high-temperature applications (above 120C), use polyurea or synthetic base greases. For food-grade applications, use NSF H1 certified greases. Always check the bearing manufacturer's grease recommendation.

Can you mix different bearing greases?

Mixing greases with different thickener types (e.g., lithium with polyurea) can cause softening, hardening, or oil separation -- leading to bearing failure. Always purge old grease completely before switching types. Use our grease compatibility chart in the Grease Selection Guide.
