Grease Compatibility

The ability of two different bearing greases to be mixed without adverse effects on consistency, oil separation, or lubricating performance.

What Is Grease Compatibility?

Grease compatibility refers to whether two greases with different thickener systems can be mixed without degrading performance. Incompatible greases undergo chemical or physical interactions that alter consistency, oil retention, and lubricating ability.

Compatibility Matrix

Lithium + lithium complex = compatible. Lithium + polyurea = incompatible. Calcium + lithium = borderline. Always consult the Grease Selection Guide compatibility chart before switching grease brands or types during re-lubrication.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if you mix incompatible greases?

Mixing incompatible greases (e.g., lithium complex with polyurea) can cause the mixture to soften drastically (leading to leakage and starvation), harden (blocking grease flow), or separate (oil bleeds out, leaving dry thickener). Any of these outcomes leads to bearing failure. Always purge old grease completely before switching types.
