What Is a Flinger Seal?
A flinger seal (or slinger) is a simple but effective contamination barrier: a metal disc pressed onto the shaft that rotates at shaft speed. At speed, centrifugal force flings water, dust, and debris radially outward before it can reach the primary seal. Flingers are often the first element in a multi-stage sealing arrangement (flinger + labyrinth + contact seal).
Applications
Conveyor pulleys, paper machines, agricultural equipment, and any outdoor equipment exposed to water spray or dust. See Seal Selection Guide for multi-barrier seal design.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a flinger seal protect a bearing?
The flinger is a metal disc pressed onto the shaft that rotates at shaft speed. Centrifugal force throws water, dust, and debris outward before it can reach the primary bearing seal. It works best at higher speeds and is typically used as the outermost element in a multi-barrier sealing arrangement.
