Needle Bearing

A compact roller bearing with long, thin cylindrical rollers (needles) that provides high radial load capacity in a minimal cross-section envelope.

What Is a Needle Bearing?

A needle bearing (also called a needle roller bearing) is a type of roller bearing that uses long, thin cylindrical rollers -- typically 3-10x longer than their diameter -- as rolling elements. This high length-to-diameter ratio provides exceptional radial load capacity in a remarkably thin cross-section.

How Needle Bearings Work

The needle rollers rotate between a hardened shaft (or inner ring) and an outer ring or drawn cup shell. The large number of small-diameter rollers creates many contact lines, distributing the load efficiently. Many needle bearings operate without an inner ring, riding directly on the hardened shaft surface to save even more space.

Common Configurations

Drawn cup: Thin stamped outer shell, lightest and most compact. Machined ring: Precision-ground raceways for higher speed and accuracy. Combined: Needle roller + thrust bearing in one unit for combined loads. Cage assembly: No outer ring, rollers ride in a cage directly inside a housing bore.

Applications

Automotive gearboxes, compressor crankshafts, textile machinery spindles, and printing presses rely on needle bearings from INA/FAG and NTN. In the UAE's automotive aftermarket, needle bearings are essential for transmission rebuilds and engine overhauls. See our Bearings & Housings catalogue for available sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are needle bearings used?

Needle bearings are used in automotive transmissions, compressor connecting rods, rocker arms, planetary gearsets, and any application where radial space is severely limited but radial load capacity must remain high.

What is the advantage of a needle bearing over a ball bearing?

Needle bearings provide much higher radial load capacity per unit of radial cross-section because the long, thin rollers distribute force across a larger contact line. This makes them ideal for compact assemblies where space is tight.
