What Is Oil Mist Lubrication?
Oil mist lubrication atomizes oil into fine droplets (1-3 microns) carried by a low-pressure air stream to bearing contact points. The mist re-condenses at the bearing, forming a thin but continuously renewed lubricating film. The slight positive air pressure also helps exclude contaminants.
Applications
High-speed spindles, turbine bearings, large electric motors, and compressors where grease cannot survive the speed or temperature. Common in oil & gas processing and petrochemical plants. See our Lubrication Management blog for a comparison of all lubrication methods.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should oil mist lubrication be used instead of grease?
Oil mist is preferred when bearing speeds exceed the grease speed limit (high ndm values), when operating temperatures exceed 150C (where grease degrades rapidly), or when continuous oil film renewal is needed in contaminated environments like steel mills and paper machines.
