Thrust Bearing

A bearing specifically designed to handle axial (thrust) loads along the shaft axis, available in ball and roller configurations.

What Is a Thrust Bearing?

A thrust bearing is designed specifically to carry axial loads -- forces acting along the shaft axis. Unlike radial bearings that support perpendicular loads, thrust bearings prevent shaft movement in the axial direction and are essential in vertical pumps, crane hooks, turntables, and automotive clutch release mechanisms.

Types

Thrust ball bearings (51100 series) for lighter loads and higher speeds. Cylindrical thrust roller bearings for heavy axial loads at moderate speeds. Tapered thrust roller bearings for extreme loads in rolling mills and presses. Spherical thrust roller bearings for combined axial + radial loads with misalignment.

Applications

Vertical pumps in water treatment, steering columns, crane slewing rings, injection molding machines, and hydraulic presses. Available from SKF, NTN, and NSK through SMS Bearings across the UAE.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a thrust bearing and a radial bearing?

Radial bearings support loads perpendicular to the shaft axis. Thrust bearings support loads parallel to the shaft axis (pushing/pulling along the shaft). Many applications require both types -- for example, a vertical pump uses a radial bearing for shaft support and a thrust bearing to handle the hydraulic axial force.
