Self-Aligning Bearing

A bearing with a spherical outer raceway that accommodates shaft misalignment and deflection, available as self-aligning ball or spherical roller types.

What Is a Self-Aligning Bearing?

A self-aligning bearing compensates for angular misalignment between the shaft and housing. The outer ring has a spherical raceway that allows the inner ring/roller assembly to tilt freely, preventing edge loading and premature failure when perfect alignment cannot be maintained.

Types

Self-aligning ball bearings (1200/2200 series): lighter loads, up to 2.5deg misalignment. Spherical roller bearings (22200/23000 series): heavy loads, up to 3deg misalignment. Both are commonly mounted in pillow block housings for easy installation.

Applications

Conveyor pulleys, agricultural equipment, textile machinery, and fan shafts where long spans and flexible mounting create angular errors. See the Pillow Block Installation Guide for alignment best practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much misalignment can a self-aligning bearing handle?

Self-aligning ball bearings tolerate up to 2.5 degrees of angular misalignment. Spherical roller bearings tolerate up to 2-3 degrees. This makes them ideal for applications with long shafts, flexible supports, or foundation settling.
